黄蜡石又名龙王玉，因石表层内蜡状质感而得名。是石英岩矿物因为受地质变动影响，与酸性土壤混合，加上酸性土壤附近有地热或火山等自然条件，长期受酸性土壤和地热火山温度的双重催化，变质形成黄蜡石。

岭南一带是我国有历史记载最早赏玩黄蜡石的地区，明清时期，广东粤东和潮汕地区就己收藏本地的黄蜡石，据永安县(今广东河源市紫金县)县志记载：“永安产蜡石，贡于朝，盛于名也。” 永安蜡石在明清时期曾制作成鼻烟壶进贡朝廷。
广东、广西、云南、江西、浙江、福建、湖南、河南、河北、东北三省等省相继发现黄蜡石，而且各具特色，全国越来越多人开始接触、喜爱黄蜡石。
